Easter in Spetses
From the **Saturday of Lazarus** through **Easter Sunday**, Spetses comes alive with traditions rooted centuries deep and preserved unchanged through the generations.
Holy Week
The celebrations take place in all the island's parishes:
- Four parishes take part in the celebrations: Agios Nikolaos, Analipsi, Agios Antonios, and Agios Ioannis.
- The Monastery of Panagia Daskalaki also holds its own services, with a more solemn character.
- Daily liturgies in all churches, culminating on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday.
Saturday of Lazarus
On the eve of Holy Week, one of the island's most beloved children's customs is revived:
- The island's children walk through the neighbourhoods carrying flower-decorated "lazarakia".
- They sing traditional songs dedicated to the resurrection of Lazarus.
- A custom preserved from older generations and revived each year.
Good Friday — the Epitaphs
The most significant night of Holy Week, with the Epitaph processions:
- The Epitaph processions begin on Good Friday evening from the four central churches.
- The processions wind through the island's narrow lanes and converge at Poseidonion square.
- There, the Epitaphs are raised aloft as the faithful gather with lit candles.
Resurrection — Holy Saturday
The crowning moment of the celebration takes on a different character in each church:
- The Resurrection is celebrated at midnight on Holy Saturday in all parishes.
- At the church of Analipsi, a wooden boat is set ablaze, a tradition that stands apart.
- At the Monastery of Panagia Daskalaki, the Resurrection is celebrated solemnly in the cemetery, without fireworks.
Easter Sunday — the Burning of Judas
The most attended custom of Easter Sunday in Spetses:
- On Easter Sunday evening, the Burning of Judas takes place at the Dapia waterfront.
- The custom is accompanied by an impressive fireworks display.
- It is one of the most attended celebrations of Easter on the island.
