Christmas in Spetses

Every December, Spetses dresses up for the holidays. **Lights, decorations, and a warm atmosphere** welcome residents and visitors to an island that celebrates while preserving its traditions. From the festively decorated Dapia to Poseidonio Square and the traditional carols echoing through the narrow streets, Christmas in Spetses is a unique experience — different from the cities, with the serenity of a winter island and the breath of the sea.

Christmas Atmosphere on the Island

With the arrival of December, Spetses transforms. Dapia is adorned with Christmas lights and decorations, while Poseidonio Square is illuminated and becomes the center of festive activities.

The traditional mansions and cobblestone alleys of the island take on a special charm in the winter light. The aromas of freshly baked melomakarona and kourabiedes from the traditional bakeries and patisseries fill the streets, creating an atmosphere that stays with you.

Festive Events

The Municipality of Spetses organizes festive events every year throughout the Christmas season. Concerts, children's activities, choir performances, and theatrical shows bring the island to life during December and the first days of January.

Local associations and the church actively participate with joint activities that honor tradition and strengthen community bonds.

The Municipality's charitable initiatives, through the Social Grocery and Social Pharmacy, take on special significance during this period, supporting fellow citizens in need.

Spetsiotic Traditions

As an island with a deep maritime tradition, Spetses celebrates Christmas with elements that recall its seafaring heritage. Alongside the Christmas tree, the tradition of decorating a model boat continues in many homes — a custom that honors Spetses' sailors and seafarers.

Traditional carols echo through the island's alleys on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, and Epiphany Eve. Children with triangles and songs keep alive a centuries-old tradition, while residents welcome them with smiles and treats.

On Epiphany Day, January 6, the Blessing of the Waters ceremony takes place at the harbor — one of the most moving moments of the holiday season for a maritime island like Spetses.
