Review of the Preparatory Session of the Τ.Ε.Σ.Ο.Π.Π. ahead of the 2026 fire-prevention season

As part of the Municipality of Spetses’ ongoing effort to keep citizens informed and to prepare for the current 2026 fire-prevention season, the Municipality provides a brief report on the preparatory session of the Local Operational Coordination Body for Civil Protection (Τ.Ε.Σ.Ο.Π.Π.), held on Friday, 12 June 2026, in the Municipal Council chamber of the Municipality of Spetses.

The session was chaired by the Mayor of Spetses, Ms Evgenia Fraggia, with the participation of the Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection, Mr Lambros Filippakos, and representatives of the Region of Attica / Regional Unit of Islands, the Fire Service, the Volunteer Fire Detachment of Spetses, the Hellenic Police, the Coast Guard, the Poros Forestry Office, DEDDIE (HEDNO), and other involved agencies.

The session focused on prevention, readiness, and coordination measures to address the risks posed by forest fires, in line with the operational plan for the fire season under the code name “Iolaos 2.” Particular emphasis was placed on the operational readiness of the services, cooperation among the involved agencies, public information, and the timely implementation of preventive interventions.

Participants and key points of the session

- Strengthening the operational readiness of the Municipality’s services and its partner agencies.
- Coordination between the Municipality, the Fire Service, the Volunteer Fire Detachment, the Hellenic Police, the Coast Guard, the Forestry Office, the Region, and DEDDIE (HEDNO).
- Informing citizens about prevention measures and the obligations to clear plots and other uncovered spaces.
- Inspection, maintenance, and, where required, the opening of forest roads, so that immediate access for fire-fighting vehicles is ensured.
- The need for preventive vegetation clearing, removal of residues, and care for the island’s critical infrastructure.
- Continuous communication and the immediate exchange of information among all involved services.

During the session, specific reference was made to the two recent fire incidents on the island, at Agriopetres and in the Ligoneri area, within the Α.Κ.Σ.Σ., which were addressed promptly and effectively thanks to the mobilisation of the fire-fighting forces, the Volunteer Fire Detachment of Spetses, the Municipality’s Civil Protection Department, and the other competent agencies.

The Mayor of Spetses and the Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection expressed their thanks to the fire-fighters, the volunteers, and all those who contributed to the immediate response to the incidents, underlining the great contribution of the Volunteer Fire Detachment of Spetses and the importance of cooperation in protecting the island’s natural wealth.

Conclusions and outcomes

- The need for timely prevention and continuous operational readiness during the fire season was confirmed.
- The importance of clearing plots, uncovered spaces, and points of heightened risk was stressed.
- The need to inspect forest roads and ensure fire-fighting vehicle access to critical areas was highlighted.
- The value of informing citizens and of the joint effort of all services and agencies was noted.
- The decisive contribution of volunteers to the prevention and response to forest fires was underlined.
